IBA: the legal profession affects lives, health, and well-being
The International Bar Association (IBA), the largest global association for legal professionals with over 80,000 members and more than 190 bar associations across 175 countries, emphasizes that its commitment to upholding the rule of law significantly contributes to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key areas impacted include health, equality, inclusion, education, and environmental sustainability.
These insights are drawn from the IBA’s Report on the Social and Economic Impact of the Legal Profession, the first study of its kind, developed with McKinsey & Company’s support for data collection and analysis.
Rule of Law and Global Health
The report highlights the connection between robust legal systems and improved global health outcomes. For instance, life expectancy increases by up to 13 years—from 62 to 75—when the highest levels of rule of law are achieved. Additionally, maternal mortality is significantly reduced, with 350,000 mothers saved annually, and child malnutrition is alleviated for 520 million children.
Empowering Youth and Promoting Equality
The legal profession’s societal impact also extends to younger generations. Addressing the alarming number of youth who are neither employed nor in education, the report suggests that 34 million young individuals could be reintegrated into society with adequate legal frameworks and advocacy.
Efforts in gender equality and the protection of marginalized groups, such as LGBTQ+ communities, are further areas where the legal profession makes a profound impact. Notably, inequality could be reduced by 5% through increased access to legal aid, the report asserts.
A Call to Action
Almudena Arpón de Mendívil (PICTURED), IBA President and partner at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo, stressed the far-reaching influence of legal professionals:
“For the first time, this study quantifies the true contributions of the legal profession. It is now evident that the work of over 12 million lawyers worldwide directly or indirectly affects the lives, health, and well-being of citizens globally. By strengthening the rule of law, we generate wealth, promote innovation and education, curb governmental abuse, reduce inequality, and advance environmental sustainability. However, the rule of law faces constant threats, including subtle erosions in democratic nations. We cannot waver in its defense.”
The report underscores the profession’s essential role in driving progress and safeguarding fundamental rights, urging continued vigilance in preserving the rule of law for a better, more equitable world.
