Baker McKenzie strengthens global M&A practice with Jan Schubert

Baker McKenzie is continuing the expansion of its global M&A and Private Equity capabilities with the appointment of Jan Schubert (PICTURED) as a partner in its Frankfurt office, effective June 1, 2025.

Schubert’s practice is primarily focused on domestic and cross-border corporate transactions, leveraged buy-outs for private equity funds, restructurings and joint ventures. He represents a variety of private equity and investment firms, as well as strategic buyers across sectors including technology, e-commerce, healthcare, chemicals and manufacturing. He regularly advises private equity clients on M&A, buy-and-build acquisitions, divestitures of portfolio companies, majority and minority investments, intercompany restructurings, management incentive programs, capital measures and other shareholder-related matters. Schubert joins from Gibson Dunn, where he was a partner.

“We are delighted to welcome Jan to Baker McKenzie,” said Berthold Hummel, Co-Head of the Firm’s Corporate Practice in Germany. “His strong background in financial sponsor work significantly enhances our ability to advise domestic and global private equity clients on their most complex, cross-border M&A deals. Jan’s arrival, together with recent hires in London and the US, further strengthens our private equity bench and highlights the continued expansion of our German transactional M&A and PE practice.”

David Allen, Co-Head of the Firm’s European Corporate Group added: “Jan is a greatly respected PE lawyer in Germany.  He adds further depth to our PE capabilities in EMEA where we provide a unique combination of deep local excellence and strength in the money markets. We are excited about working with Jan on German and cross-border deals.”

Commenting on his move, Schubert said: “Joining Baker McKenzie is an exciting step for me. The Firm’s global platform, cross-practice capabilities, and seamless service across jurisdictions are a perfect fit for my clients’ international needs. I look forward to helping grow the Firm’s transactional practice in Germany and beyond.”

Jan is the latest partner to join Baker McKenzie in Germany, where the Firm has been growing its bench through additions from other leading law firms. The Firm recently welcomed corporate M&A partners Dirk Horcher (Munich) and Daniel Dehghanian (Düsseldorf), alongside Banking & Finance partner Conrad Ruppel and M&A partner Johannes Baumann (both Frankfurt). The German Restructuring & Insolvency team also expanded with the arrivals of Andrea Soprano (counsel), Joachim Ponseck (partner), and Artur Swierczok (counsel) in Frankfurt.

The addition of Jan Schubert also underscores the continued expansion of Baker McKenzie’s global transactional capabilities. Over the past 12 months, the Firm has added more than 35 transactional partners across key financial centers, including an elite transactional team in Los Angeles and a high-caliber M&A team in Singapore. Other notable arrivals include Tobias Knapp (New York); Colin Bowes-Carlson (Chicago); Eric Schwartzman (San Francisco); Erika López (Chicago); Colleen Lee (Palo Alto) and Michal Berkner (London).
